In the beginning, the upcoming Swedish band called themselves Bjorn and Benny, Agnetha and Anni-Frid, and their first collaborated cabaret act Festfolk in 1970 failed. Then in the spring of 1972, their song ‘people need love’ became a medium-sized hit in Sweden. Encouraged by this, they went on to participating in the Eurovision song contest with the song ‘Ring Ring’, though they stood third, the song became a hit in several European nations and competed for the top slot in Sweden. By the time they entered again in 1974, they were calling themselves ABBA and their song ‘waterloo’ became a hit taking them to the finals in England. From their it was a roller coaster ride with songs like ‘SOS’, ‘Mamma Mia’, ‘Fernando’ and ‘Dancing Queen’ becoming a rage with the disco world. From 1976 to 1982, they belted out hits after hits; songs and albums and tours of Europe, Japan and USA. Despite the couples getting divorced in 1979 and 1981, the ABBAs were perceived as happy couples making music together and they continued working together till 1982 when they decided to take a break.

Though the ABBAs have not had a very long career together, just over a decade, Disco would have not been the same without them. Even today if you ask the DJ for a disco number, he is sure to play you ‘Take a chance on me’ or the ‘dancing queen’. Disco just cannot be imagined without the melodious voice of the ABBA.

Though they came from different music genres, they became great partners in composing songs. Bjorn was a member of the Hootenanny singers and their records were on the Polar Music record label owned by Stig Anderson. Stig went on to become ABBAs manager and contributed lyrics in the first few years as well. In the spring of 1969, Bjorn and Benny met the two women who became their fiancés and the other half of ABBA. Agnetha Faltskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad both had their own solo recording careers before they became a part of ABBA and ABBA costumes wear. Agnetha and Bjorn married in 1971 while Benny and Frida waited till 1978 to tie the knot.

This was a private member-only dance club and proved to be forerunner to disco style clubs. The first disco songs were released in 1973; however there are claims that Manu Dibango’s 1972 Soul Makossa was the first disco album being recorded. Disco was first written about in September of 1974 in the Rolling Stone Magazine by Vince Aletti and the first disco radio show was hosted on New York City’s WPIX-FM in 1974. ABBA was huge and so were their ABBA costumes.

The disco sounds have soaring, reverberating vocals over a steady beat and is known to be influenced by funk, soul music and Latin or Hispanic salsa influences. A lush background sound is lent by strings, electric guitars, horns and electric pianos made both singers and music producers equally famous and pivotal to the entire disco theme. Some of the most famous disco groups from the 70s are the Bee Gees, Diana Ross, The Jacksons and the ABBAs. The ABBA costumes were amazing.

The costumes, looks, hairdos are all as many in number as the number of known and unknown singers of past gone by and all of the present. It is probably right when we assume different singers wear different costumes and thank god for it! Wonder were would have the cult following channeled without our favorite singers leading the way in style, fashion and clothes!

Most singers had their own trademark styles of dressing up and were the fashion police of their own times. This is of vital importance as it is the main reason why youngsters then and now loved dressing up like them. It is a common psyche; we love to dress up like our idols or performers whom we simply love. This also explains the huge sales of Gene Simmons costumes, wigs and masks. Halloween is a time when you see an entire brigade of young people dressed up like Gene Simmons with his big silver shoes, heavily accented jackets and a mask with the famous tongue sticking out!

The ABBA costumes from the 70s are one craze that will never end, just like their everlasting music. The band were the epitome of sweet love, couples making music and singing together were revered in Sweden! Mini skirts and bootlegs with ruffles below the knees, loose fitting shirts with bells and shiny men’s shirts with ruffles. Broad belts and blonde wigs became big fashion since Frida and Agneta featured them on their tours and album covers. The ABBA look is still such a rage with the disco loving rage that the number of costumes bought despite them not being exactly cheap is staggering.

Unintentionally but still just like music is divided into different genres, musicians and singers are also seen adorning different clothes. So, if you love rock music, you know they wear long hair and leather clothes with metal spikes; if you loved the disco era, singers wore bell bottoms and flare sleeved shirts. How about an ABBA costume.

Whether at a costume party, a theme party or Halloween, we love dressing up. And if we can dress up like the celebrities or band members of our favorite group, nothing like it! Different singers wear different costumes and these are easily available at stores and online merchants. You can sort costumes by the year, 70s, and 80s and so on. You could choose a costume by the music genre, like disco, rock, pop, country. You could also choose your attire to imitate a band or a particular singer. Perhaps the most imitated singer of all times has been Elvis Presley. Don’t we just love those white flared shirts with ruffled- laced chest, white bell bottoms with silver accents, the blonde wig with that trademark hairdo and top it with a soulful ballad and you are ready to swoon girls!

The following year, Benny, Bjorn and Stig wrote and performed “Waterloo” and walked away with the Swedish Eurovision heat. The song became the first Swedish act to win the heat and “waterloo” launched ABBA as the first international pop act who performed in a language other than their native tongue. Their songs would always open at the top of the charts in the USA, UK, Germany, Scandinavia and they were as popular in the English speaking nations as in the non-English speaking countries. Despite their individual divorces, the band continued to make great music. Songs like “knowing me, knowing you”, “I have a dream”, and “lay all your love on me” were hits on both sides of the Atlantic. All their albums were a major success Voulez-Vous, Super Trouper and The visitors which was their last album together.

In 1982, ABBA took a break from being a band and each member continues with a successful solo career even today. For several years, ABBA was only next to Volvo in being Sweden’s biggest export earners. They have been revered and remain a legendary and most accomplished rock bands ever.

By 1970 Bjorn and Agnetha, Benny and Frida were in love and were living together while maintaining their solo careers. Polar Music was headed by Stig Anderson, a well known Swedish music business entrepreneur who had contributed more than 2000 songs in the 60s and 70s. When Stig’s partner died, he invited Bjorn to be a replacement who bought Benny along.

Meanwhile, Bjorn and Agnetha moved into theatre and gave a massive hit “don’t know how to love him” in the Lloyd Webber musical, Jesus Christ Superstar. In 1972, Bjorn and Benny gave a big hit in Japan in the way of “People need love”. Owing to their great popularity and their Abba costumes, they were invited to the Eurovision song contest in the 1973 Swedish heat, the band was then named Benny &Bjorn, Agnetha & Frida and they entered with the famous “Ring Ring”. The audience loved the song, though the judges placed it at number 3. Due to the following public outcry, Swedish Eurovision entries began to be chosen through public voting since then.

The ABBAs were probably the most influential bands during the 70s where youngsters were concerned. The band always has been perceived as two beautiful couples much in love and making melodious music and wearing thir unique ABBA costumes. The band comprised of Bjorn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, Agnetha Faltskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad, also known as Frida. ABBAs history is as interesting as their music and takes us through the lives of four people all of whom spent most of their lives making music.

Benny Andersson was a member of the ‘Swedish Beatles’ band called the Hep Stars from 1964 to 1969. He met and formed a songwriting partnership with Bjorn Ulvaeus, who was a member of a well known rock group called The Hootenanny Singers. Both were successful in their bands and when they came together, wrote songs and working as producers for Polar music. Frida was a local celebrity with her solo singing career in Stockholm, and had formed a band called The Ann-Frid Four with bass player Ragnar Frederickson. Agnetha was singing with bands in Sweden since the age of 15 and belted consistent hits since the age of 18.

Invited to A theme party on the 70s? The best bet is to dress up as one of the band members of ABBA. Even if you simply wear long sleeved loose shirts with added fringes over bootlegs with three or four flares below the knee, everybody would know you are the ABBAs.

The heightened popularity of the ABBAs makes their costumes so accessible and recognizable that you will never have to explain who you are dressed like! And if you have a voice to match, grab some lyrics and you have won the party already!

One of the best places to compare and show off your ABBA costumes is tribute nights. The ABBA tribute nights see people donning costumes from particular songs and tours to the hilt. So, while the ‘Mamma Mia’ costumes are pretty famous, they are beaten hands down by the more widely chosen ‘Dancing Queen’.

Whether at Halloween, a costume party, fancy dress competition or the upcoming ABBA movie show don your best ABBA costume and impress the world around you!
